Protect your consumer rights in CT with a simple phone call or an email.

On Monday, March 16th, the Coonecticut Government Administration and Elections Committee (GAE) will hold a hearing on SB 840 which, among other things, will eliminate the Office of Consumer Council (OCC). This cannot stand. This is the office that looks out for and stands up for the consumer on energy issues in CT. Without the office of consumer council, there will be an unfavorable balance of power on energy issues in this state. There will be plenty of people looking out for the Utilities and no one to look out for residential & small business energy users in CT.

First, Connectictu Citizens should be aware that the OCC is not funded by taxpayer dollars but, rather by ratepayer funds. This means that eliminating this office will not provide any general fund budget savings for the State.

Symbolically this tells us all something about who our current governor and her administration is really representing. Please consider either attending or sending in a statement to GAE Committee to voice your opposition to this bill and your support from keeping the Office of Consumer Council. You can also contact your State representative or senator.

Last week An Act Prohibiting Gender Discrimination for Individual Health Insurance Policies CT SB-822 died in the Insurance and R.E. Committeee. It would have prohibited insurance companies from charging women and men of the same age and health status two different rates. Women under age 40, according to the Natl Women's Law Center, pay between 6 and 48% more for individual insurance than men. Maternity care is not included in most policies of the poorly regulated individual insurance market. Currently 167,000 CT women are forced to buy their policies on this market.
So here are the Democrats that voted against the bill. As I said, it lost by ONE vote. Senator, Joan Hartley l-800 840-1420 (normally supportive of women's health insues)--She represents SD 15, Naugatuck, Prospect, Waterbury.

Also voting against the bill were Representatives (860-240-8585) Emil Altobell (House 82, Meriden); Kelvin Roldan (House 04, Hartford); Christopher Wright (House 77, Bristol)
and Linda Schofield from Simsbury (House 16) Linda, in my
view deserves a lot of criticism as she has consulted for the
insurance industry in the past and in my view has a conflict
of interest for being on the insurance and real estate committee.

Please join me in contacting these folks and letting them know that you are unhappy with their actions. If you choose
to write them, you can do so at the LOB (Legislative Office
Buiding, Hartford, CT 06106-1501)
