THANK YOU ALL for the phone calls, the emails, the meetings and rallies you attended and all of your efforts. We passed Health care in the House and Senate. Now we just need to let the Governor know how important it is to sign the SustiNet Bill HB6600 and the CT Partnership Bill.

It does not stop there. Check out our community blog, GroundUp, and read all about how we can continue our efforts for national health care reform.

Thank you all for all that you do.

HHS Announces Initiatives in Support of the “Year of Community Living”

Goal is to create Aging and Disability Resource Centers in every State

In support of President Obama’s proclamation of the “Year of Community Living,” HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced a funding opportunity that will make it easier for older people, younger adults, and their families to learn about and access health and long-term care options through Aging and Disability Resource Center Programs (ADRCs). ADRCs provide “one-stop shop” sources of information, one-on-one counseling, and streamlined access to programs and services that can enable people to remain in their own homes and communities. I would say tracking the bills and contacting committee members as the bills proceed. Right now the pooling bill is slated to go before the Planning and Development committee. Sustinet just received a big boost from small business when the Connecticut Association of Realtors endorsed the plan. Read more here: Hundreds March for Health Reform

Attending the HCAN Congressional Health Care Forums would really help also.

That's great, Dan. What can folks do in this committee to continue to ensure success for both bills as they go through the legislative process?

On March 26, 2009, the Sustinet bill (HB 6600) was voted out of the Public Health Committee by a 22-8 margin. It is now slated to go before a few more committees before heading to the Senate and House floor.

The other major health care bill, commonly called the pooling bill Connecticut Healthcare Partnership, was voted out of committee on March 10.

On Thursday, March 26, the Public Health Committee will be voting on SustiNet, HB 6600, at 10am in room 1D at the Legislative Office Building. Calls and emails to legislators are needed -- even if you've emailed before.

Right now, calls are most important and talking points and phone numbers are available for you. It only takes a moment. (If your legislators are not on the Public Health Committee, you will be linked to the email page.)

Call your legislator here.

If you'd rather send an email, please send it here.

Deadlines are looming, and every voice counts, so please contact your legislator today. Support for SustiNet is strong, but opponents of meaningful reform are working hard. Make your voice heard.

URGENT MESSAGE FROM PAUL WESSEL OF Healthcare4every1.org:

The deadline to pass SustiNet (HB 6600) out of the Public Health Committee is next Friday, March 27 and it may be voted on as soon as this Friday. This is a crucial first step for the bill.

One of your legislators may sit on the Public Health Committee, and we need to contact them now and urge them to vote YES on the bill BEFORE the deadline on March 27.

Click here to Email your legislators in the Public Health Committee today.

The vote in the Public Health Committee is one of the first steps for SustiNet. After this vote, it will head to several other committees and eventually to the House and Senate floor. Your voice now will ensure a strong showing in Public Health and build momentum for the ride ahead.

Thank you for speaking out. Connecticut is ready for quality, affordable health care -- and you are making sure it will happen this year.

Sincerely,
Paul Wessel, Field Director

Hi group,

I hope that we will be supporting other worthwhile health legislation in Hartford as well.

I will suggest some other bills later. These will not conflict
with our common goal of passing HB6600.

We should definitely support the Pooling Bill HB 6582 too.

Hi all,
At our initial meeting in New Haven on Saturday, March 21st, I mentioned that there was another strong health care bill making its way in the CT legislature. That bill is commonly called the "Pooling Bill". Last year the pooling bill received wide-spread support from community groups, health care advocates, and labor. It passed the General Assembly but, despite a strong community and labor campaign, was vetoed by Governor Rell.

The pooling bill this year is a bit different since it proposes to self insure. While the Sustinet bill offers an ambitious and clear path to affordable and accessible health care for all, the pooling bill may be a good alternative if Sustinet falters since it is well known by legislators and did pass both houses last year.
Thanks to Christine Stuart for her coverage of both the pooling bill and Sustinet during yesterday's hearings. There was no coverage in the Hartford Courant that I could find.
