Woodbury CT 06798
December 2008
Dear President-elect Obama,
The members of the Woodbury, Connecticut Democratic Town Committee believe that the cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment to which some detainees and prisoners have been subjected by the United States government under the Bush administration constitutes torture. We have watched with horror and shame as our government has perpetrated these crimes. We unequivocally repudiate such inhumane treatment. Such actions have undermined our safety, and have damaged our standing and position of leadership in the world.
We call upon you, in your first act as President, to right this grievous wrong. We request that you re-affirm the terms of the Geneva Convention with respect to the treatment of detainees. We ask you to state unequivocally that there are no conditions under which torture is justified and to pledge that the United States will never again engage in such actions. We call upon you to restore morality and decency to the conduct of our government, and to thereby restore our position among nations, and as promoters of freedom and justice around the world.
To demonstrate to the American people and the world that the Obama administration is committed to protecting the rights of ALL prisoners and detainees held by the American government or its representatives, we urge you to take the following actions as soon as possible after January 20th:
- Close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay
- Close the School of the Americas
- Re-sign the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and recommend ratification by Congress.
We have asked our local, state and federal officials to join with us in making this request.
Respectfully,
Lesa Peters
Chair, Woodbury Democratic Town Committee
Cc: Senator Christopher Dodd
Senator Joseph Lieberman
Congressman Christopher Murphy
Nancy DiNardo, Chair Connecticut State Central Committee
